The Story Behind the Name| Kinsley Mae

The Story Behind the Name| Kinsley Mae

When we first found out all the diagnosis about Kinsley and we were unsure about what her health, and life would be like, it was really important to me that her name was somehow meaningful to the life that she would live. All throughout the pregnancy I had been drawn to the name Kinsley Mae. I thought it was super pretty, but getting Derek on board was quite the task. I decided that since this was the name I kept going back to in my mind, I had better look up its meaning to see if it was something that I really wanted to be pushing for.

It turns out that her name is just as perfect as she is. Kinsley comes from an old English name, Cynesige, which means victory. The meaning of the name Mae in Hebrew means bitter. At first when I saw Mae meant bitter, I started to really not like the name that much anymore. But the more I thought about it, the more I loved it!

Ultimately, while Kinsley is doing amazing health wise right now, we really don't know what her health looking forward is going to be like, and we really don't know how long we really will have her (although things are looking a million times better than they were a month ago and we really do think she is going to have a pretty great and long life ahead of her). Her diagnosis of semilobar holoprosencephaly was a pretty bitter thing from the beginning. But through the gospel perspective Kinsley is going to have a victory over a really bitter thing. When she leaves this earth, her body will be perfect, and that is the greatest victory ever. We seriously love this little girl so much.

I'm 23! - The Happy Flammily

I'm 23! - The Happy Flammily

Friday was a great day spent at home celebrating my birthday! It's hard to believe I'm 23, married, and have two amazing little kids but I love it, and wouldn't have it any other way! In true Derek fashion I got spoiled once again! Derek and I are huge Settlers of Catan junkies thanks to his old roommate and his wife. Whenever we get together with them, we always make them bring their game so we can play! We'd been talking about getting our own game for a couple years now, and then when Amazon had it on sale last week, with the Cities and Knights expansion pack, Derek and his sister teamed up and pulled the plug. This was also the first time I didn't ruin one of Derek's surprises by not finding out what I got ahead of time, and to tell you the truth, there actually is joy in not knowing your presents ahead of time! Who would have thought?

Em is Here

Em is Here

Em  arrived Monday morning at 6:15 am. She was 7lbs 12oz and 20 3/4in long. Everyday since her arrival has been Christmas and we just really can't believe that we actually got to take this sweet baby home from the hospital. We love her so much!

It all started at 7pm Sunday night. We got in the car and dropped Jay off at the babysitters, and then made the drive up to Duke Medical Center. I was scheduled for an 8pm induction, but all 20 rooms in labor and delivery were full, so we had to wait in the waiting room until someone popped out a baby and a room would open for us.

We finally got into our room, but our nurse who was supposed to get things going for us got whisked off to another room and we didn't see her again for a while. Finally by 2am they got all my IV's in and the pitocin started. After the pitocin was in the Doctor came to talk to Derek and I about what our plans were for the baby if her heart rate started falling during labor. The doctor was preparing us to have a stillbirth because of the holoprosencephaly, and Derek and I agreed that we understood.

I was already at a 4 when the pitocin started (can we give a fist pump for being 4cm's without a single contraction?), and assumed hard labor was going to start instantly, but it didn't. We all slept for a couple hours when all of a sudden I started having super bad contractions. I woke up Derek and he helped me breathe through a couple strong ones when finally I decided I'd either peed myself, or my water had broken. We called in the doctor and she checked me. I was only 5cm, but sure enough my water had broken. I told her I wanted the epidural ASAP and she said that was fine, and she left to go work on that for me.

Once the doctor left, things got real bad real quick. I had a few more contractions that were by far the worse pain I'd ever felt in my life when the nurse came into tell me that there were currently 3 people all having c-sections right now in the OR and that the anesthesiologist was with them and that I would be able to get my epidural when she was done.

I asked to get something in my IV to take the pain away for a little bit, but sadly it didn't work to well. They also brought in a birthing ball for me to use, and helped me into some other positions but nothing was helping. After trying a few new positions in/on/around the bed for a while, I finally tried the birthing ball which DID. NOT. HELP. WOOF. The second contraction that I had on the birthing ball my body was automatically pushing the baby out. I had no control and screamed for someone to go get the doctor. I don't think Derek or Tracie thought that I really needed to push yet, but they obliged and got the doctor for me.

I threw myself up on the bed and the doctor checked me. Sure enough I was a 10 and the baby was already crowning. From the time I was a 5, to crowning, I had only had about 10 contractions, and it had only been an hour. I was still adamant about wanting my epidural, and they all pretty much told me it was too late, and that my only option was to push.I had three more contractions that I pushed/screamed through, and then Em was finally here!

Seeing Em was the greatest feeling in the world. She came out screaming, had a full head of hair, and no facial problems what so ever. This baby that no one had given us much hope for, even during labor, has been surprising everyone since the day she was born.

Em spent 32 hours in the NICU where they ran a bunch of tests and did another MRI. Her MRI confirmed that she does still have semilobar holoprosencephaly, but her body and health aren't showing any signs of it at all. She passed her hearing test in the NICU faster than any baby had ever done it before. She's been tracking our fingers since being home which is telling us that she's not blind like the doctor's told us she'd be. Everyday has been the biggest blessing and miracle. I have so much gratitude to our Heavenly Father who has blessed us with this perfect baby that is in our home.

We were told that she would most likely need to be on breathing tubes, and feeding tubes, so far she hasn't needed any medical support at all. She is doing everything on her own, and the doctors said aside from her brain abnormalities, she is just as healthy as any other baby. She's even been nursing like a complete champ! We just have so much gratitude over here. SO MUCH GRATITUDE.

Looking forward Em could very well still have mental and developmental delays, but as of right now she is doing everything that she needs to be doing and is surprising us everyday! We are just totally smitten!

Jay's 2nd Birthday| Party on a Budget

Jay's 2nd Birthday| Party on a Budget

Saturday we threw Jay a pretty over the top birthday party that I'm sure he is never going to remember. It was pretty fun though, and I have to admit, this is the most pinteresty thing I've ever pulled together. I was pretty proud of myself! We wound up having 21 people (adults, children and infants), all gathered together in our apartment for a couple hours. Jay was a champ about sharing all of his toys, and even managed to snag himself an entire glazed donut that he downed in about 2 minutes flat. Note: if your goal is to deprive your kid of sugar, they will viciously consume it as fast as they can when they get their hands on it.

When I had originally planned this party for Jay I was worried that it was going to completely break the bank. I wound up spending about $75 total on the entire party, and that included, food and decorations. I also split up buying things over 2 months so that it wasn't like one big blow to the wallet all at once. I think the biggest thing that helped keep the price down was using Joann's Coupons. Did you know if you have 4 different 50% off 1 regular priced item coupon, they'll let you use all 4 of them in one transaction? Blew my mind. I'll give a break down of everything I used for the party below, and where to purchase it!

Plates, cups, napkins, streamers, ribbon (on donut pops), 2 glass plates, and 2 glass candlesticks (for cake stands)- Dollar Tree ($9)
Mason Jar for Straws- Walmart (had)
DIY Cake Stands (Tutorial here)
e6000 glue (for cake stands), Straws and Balloons- Target ($9.50)
Cake Pop Stand, Lollipop Sticks, Muffin Liners- Joann's ($9) after 50% off coupons
Beverage Dispenser- Amazon (had)
Donuts and Donut Holes- Dunkin Donuts ($22)
Fruit, Water Bottles, Muffin Mix, Mini Cereal Boxes, Orange Juice- Grocery Store ($22)
Lace Table Cloth- NC Factory Outlet Sale $2

So there you have it. Maybe spending $75 on a birthday party for a two year old is a wee bit ridiculous, but it was fun! On the plus side, all the decor items that I bought/made I'll be able to use for future gatherings and birthday parties that maybe Jay will remember!

How much do you typically spend on throwing a birthday party for your children? Is $75 super obnoxious? This was my first go around, and I felt like I did pretty good, but I could be kidding myself...

Have a Ball Stunt Hunt with Fruitshoot

Have a Ball Stunt Hunt with Fruitshoot

Compensation for this post was provided by Linqia for participation in the Have a Ball Stunt Hunt with Robinson's Fruitshoot. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Jay is at this fun age where his imagination is starting to develop, and the things he does completely crack my husband and I up sometimes. We've been working on teaching him the art of bowling over the last couple weeks, but it's not clicking to say the least. He's much more interested in turning pins into swords, being a human bulldozer and knocking them over, and of course, just running right through them.

Fruitshoot is celebrating creative imaginations by holding a video contest to see which kids can be most imaginative with normal household items. In this case- a ball and some juice bottles. Luckily these two items can entertain a two year old for a couple hours so it was really fun doing this with Jay. For our video, we chose (i.e., Jay chose...) to do the ultimate bowling fake out! You can enter your awesome less-than-30-second videos and read all the details here.

Some of the other activities we had with these bottles were: Keep Jay from knocking down the pins, use the bottles as drum sticks on dad's back, organize the bottles for bowling that won't happen, run through the bottles, and of course, tear them down as fast as mom and dad can get them up. Seriously, I should stop recycling (wait, I don't recycle)... and let Jay play with empty bottles more often.

10 Ways to Survive a Summer Pregnancy with a Toddler

10 Ways to Survive a Summer Pregnancy with a Toddler

Now that I'm 12ish days away from having another baby, I think I'm a chief authority on the subject of surviving summer pregnancies. This one was a little different since I had another child to take care of this time around... But finding things to do, and switching it up daily really helped to make the days go by faster, and for me to be as comfortable as possible while carrying a nine pound baby. PS who wants to take votes on whether the doctors are right on this being a nine pound baby. I'm calling a bluff.

1. Swimming at the Pool
My little guy is at this fabulous stage where he loves to sit on the steps of the pool and splash. Which is perfect for me since I get to swim in the water and feel weightless for a couple hours, and he's happy as can be. We also just purchased this life jacket at Target a couple weeks ago, and he loves it!

2. Library Story Times
Finding indoor activities is crucial. I faint and get over heated really easily, so toddler story time at our local library happens a couple times a week. Check your local libraries to see what events they do for toddlers, I'm sure they have some!

3. Music Makers
A bunch of ladies at our church do a program called music makers every Monday in our church building. You could start this on a smaller scale in your home with a couple other moms, and the kids love it. Here's the link to the official blog where you can get the finger plays, songs, and everything else!

4. Discounted Summer Movies
All of the movie theaters in my area have special discounts Monday-Thursday for the 10am show. Sometimes parents get in free and you pay $2 per kid, sometimes completely free. Check what's available in your area. Obviously watching movies all the time isn't ideal, but getting out of the house, and sitting in AC for a couple hours might just be worth it.

5. Mall Play Areas
I've been loving taking Jay to the mall and just letting him play in the kids area. It's enclosed, you get to talk to other moms, and your kid is entertained for at least a couple hours.

6. Bubbles Inside
This one can be kind of messy, but Jay knows that he doesn't touch the bubble wand only mom and dad. And if anything, our carpet gets a couple drops of clean soap on it every now and then. Carpet cleaning, and toddler entertainment in one?

7. Gymnastic Gyms
All of the local gymnastics gyms around here have a preschool open play for kids 18 months and up. It's super fun, and only cost $5! We don't do this too often, but when we do, Jay loves it!

8. Find Friends Their Age
I've been super lucky this pregnancy to have a friend with a toddler who is the same age as Jay. They're the best of friends and we try to get together a couple times a week. The kids play together freely and I get an entire morning of talking to another adult for a couple hours!

9. Let Them Play by Themselves
I used to feel really guilty if I wasn't on the floor building blocks or reading stories with Jay. I thought I had to be hands on 24/7. This got to be pretty exhausting as you can imagine. He's now super content to play with his toys on his own for an hour or so while I recuperate from piggy back rides on the couch.

10. Play on the Patio
We're lucky to have a fenced in patio connected to our apartment. Jay loves playing out there with chalk and balls and I get to sit outside and relax for a little bit. Or sometimes I just sit inside and watch him from the window.
