Dog Grooming For Beginners

Dog Grooming For Beginners

Grooming your dog at home can save you a lot of money over the course of a year. We started grooming our dog with great success. If you need a crash course in dog grooming for beginners, we have all your answers from one newbie to another.

Our dog is a terrier mix that we got from the animal shelter a little over a year ago. He is about 10 pounds, but grows a ton of hair and sheds like crazy. The coronavirus put us in an interesting situation where he desperately needed to be groomed, but his shots were expired so we couldn't take him to the groomer, and we can't take him to the vet to get his shots because #quarantine, so Derek and I took it upon ourselves to groom him on our own several weeks ago.

I'm going to preface all of this with: We are not professionals. We had no clue what we were doing. If you groom your dog at home you do so at your own risk.

At Home Dog Grooming For Beginners:

First, Wash Your Dog:

Our dog's fur was pretty gross at this point and super matted in a lot of areas, especially around his bum and paws. We gave him a bath using this oatmeal dog shampoo. This helped to smooth out all of his hair so that the trimmers would glide through it more easily. If the fur is matted down and stuck together, it will snag in the trimmers and could possibly hurt your dog.

Where to Groom Your Dog At Home:

We groomed our dog right in our master bathroom on our counter. We took everything off of the counter and set it in our bathtub with the curtain closed so that any fur that got airborne wouldn't get all over our personal hygiene items. We then just set Chester right up on the counter and he did really well. Derek and I took turns positioning him while the other groomed and trimmed, and Chester honestly didn't really move, bark, yelp, or anything the entire time. He just sat there and took it like a champ.

In hindsight, we saw one of our neighbors grooming their dog outside on their porch and this actually sounds like a much easier idea. We will totally be doing this next time.

Best Clippers for Dog Fur:

We have a hair trimmer that we bought several years ago for me to cut Kyle's hair with. We originally thought that it would be too loud and scare Chester, but then had a friend tell us they used a human hair trimmer on their dog and nothing bad happened, so we decided to go that route and use ours. When we were done we sanitized the entire thing with bleach so we could go back to using it on humans again.

We used the #3 guard on the trimmer for his back, legs, neck, belly, and every part of him had a large enough surface area for the large trimmer to easily reach. This is the trimmer we used.

Derek also has a smaller trimmer that he uses for his beard. We used the smaller trimmer on his paws, legs, near his bum, and genital area (sorry yes, I went there). This is the beard trimmer we used.

How We Knew How To Cut Our Dog's Hair:

Before we attempted the initial cut, we typed into youtube, "how to groom a terrier". We had a pretty good idea on what to do because we know what his fur looks like when it's professionally groomed, but seeing someone else do it in a video first gave a lot of peace of mind that it wouldn't be too difficult.

Our dog is super low maintenance, so we basically trimmed it all down like a buzz cut and called it good, except for some fine details.

Before you groom your own dog at home, I highly recommend watching a couple videos first to see how other people groom your particular breed.

Grooming The Fine Details:

The hardest parts for us to groom were around his face, genitals, and paws. They're just super small areas and our trimmers with the guards on were much too big to get into those spaces.

We ended up taking the guards off and using the blade right on his fur to get to these area. For the paws, we pushed all his hair up so that it was going opposite of the grain and sticking up, and then very carefully buzzed off the fur that was standing up. We never put the blade itself against his body, and only used it to remove the fur that was sticking up away from his body. We did this along his legs, genitals, and any other areas that had unruly hair that was sticking up that the trimmer could not get to with the guard on.

If this makes you nervous, or you don't have a stead hand, definitely don't do it. Derek and I took turns doing this and felt really confident that we had a steady enough hand to not make a mistake. Obviously when you take the guard off you're assuming risks, but that was how we were able to get the closest trim.

Derek has a really tiny pair of scissors for his beard that we used to trim the fur around Chester's eyebrows, mouth, and face area. We simply picked up the long, excess fur between two fingers, and trimmed it down like a hair dresser would at a salon. We made sure to only ever cut above where our fingers were holding the fur and not below. Cutting below where you're holding the fur would risk poking them in the eye and things like that. Always cut above your fingers!

When You're All Done:

Derek took Chester into the other bathroom to wash off all the loose fur that was hanging out on him while I cleaned our bathroom. I find it best to work from top to bottom, so I cleaned all the fur off of the counter, and then sprayed and wiped down our cabinets, and then swept the floor. We then moped the floor to make sure that all the little fur particles were fully off the floor and wouldn't transfer to other areas of the house.

How Long Does Grooming Your Dog Take?

I think between the bath at the beginning and the end, and the trimming in between, it took us about two hours. With practice it could probably become a lot quicker over time. Update: We've groomed our dog at home three times now, and our most recent attempt only took 30 minutes!

Is Grooming Your Own Dog Worth It?

Yes! It honestly wasn't that bad. Considering every time we go to the groomer we pay about $75, I would much rather do it at home for free. The only caveat is that we don't feel super comfortable trimming his claws on our own, and so I do think we would still pay $10-$15 for him to have that done somewhere else! Update: We've saved almost $300 since quarantine started by doing this on our own. Totally worth it!

16 Inside Activities for Kids

16 Inside Activities for Kids

If you're spending lots of time inside this winter, or need something to do that isn't far from home, these 16 inside activities for kids will hopefully bust the boredom!

Raise your hand if you foolishly thought this quarantine was just going to be a fun couple of weeks at home. We are on week nine at home in our house (kids got the flu before lock down and never got better before this all happened), and to be honest it's starting to weigh me down a bit.

The last couple of weeks have been hard, and since getting an iPad to for online learning, it's all Kinsley asks for about 99% of the day. If you haven't had a five year old ask you if she can play the iPad for eight hours straight, are you even living life?

16 Inside Activities for Kids:

If you need an arsenal of go-to, quick and easy mostly screen free activities (some require a screen, but the screen isn't the major point of the activity), here are 16 of our favorite go-to activities for this time at home.

Color By Number Books:

Kyle is obsessed with color-by-number coloring sheets. We bought him several different color-by-number coloring books on Amazon over the last year and he's been obsessed with all of them. In that same realm, I've also thought that the Sticker By Number books are really cool too. Here's a quick list of the ones we've bought, and ones we're interested in.

Reading

I know every parent says this, but if you have a kid who loves to read, totally monopolize on that. Even Kinsley who can't actually read loves to look at books on the couch, and be read to for long periods of time. You can see all my book lists and recommendations here.

Make Oobleck

Oobleck is a super fun and easy activity to put together for your kids. Make sure you're in a good mood when you start because it's similar to slime and will make a mess. You kids will love it though! For instructions on how to make Oobleck, click here!

Make Slime

In the same vein as the last suggestion, play with slime! I have never really made slime at home, but we usually just get it from the dollar spot at Target. It comes in small containers, and doesn't actually make a huge mess. The kids love sticking their action figures and other toys into it, and then dig them out. They could literally do this for hours straight.

Homemade Play-Dough Recipe

If you haven't made homemade play-dough, you're honestly missing out. I find it to be so much softer and more enjoyable to play with than the real stuff, and it could totally double as a homeschool science lesson for the day. This is our go-to recipe for homemade play-dough.

Audiobooks

Kyle recently discovered Audiobooks and it has been so fun for him. He's listened to most of the Boxcar Children series during quarantine, and asks to listen on the iPad every night before bed. This is one of those activities where you need a device, but the device is facilitating something better. We use an app called Epic, which is free for 30 days and then goes to $6.99 a month. They have a huge selection of unlimited books to read, and listen to, and we've loved it for both Kyle and Kinsley. We even went to cancel our membership before we had to pay after the trial, and they gave us another month for only $2.99. You can try Epic free for 30 days here.

Learn to Draw Books

This is another one we haven't done yet, but probably should since we're majorly failing on keeping up with Kyle's art class. I loved these books as a kid because it was always so fun to draw my favorite characters. You can see a huge variety of learning to draw books here.

Cooking with Kids

I've really wanted to take this time to teach Kyle how to cook in the kitchen. We bought him a kid's cookbook, Kids Bake: 100+ Sweet and Savory Recipes. I'm super excited for it to get here and start working through some recipes with him and get him more comfortable with cooking. You could also try a Raddish Kids subscription.

Free Printable Coloring Pages

My kids love when I print them out random coloring pages that I find on google, or the ones that I've made and shared here on the blog. If you need something in a hurry without spending money, these are always my go-to for a quick and easy activity. Be sure to come back on May 1st when I launch six new free coloring pages!

Write Letters to Family

This is something we really need to do this week! My friends over at LDZStudios made these super cute printable envelopes that I really want to print out and send letters in!

Kids Yoga

If you didn't know we switched Kyle from a public school to a private school this year. We learned since switching that apparently his old school did Cosmic Kids Yoga everyday in his French class... who knew? Anyways, he's apparently a yoga aficionado so we made a rule that he couldn't play on screens unless he does yoga first... which involves a screen but this is an activity with a greater good than just vegging.  There are a ton of different themed videos like Harry Potter Yoga, Dinosaur Yoga, Minecraft, etc... Kyle apparently knows them all and tells me which one he wants to do and I turn it on for him.

Bike Rides

We've gotten really into bike rides during quarantine. Kinsley can now pedal her trike with basically no help from us, and Kyle has gotten really good at pedaling his bike with confidence, which has been huge for him. Derek and I just walk up and down our street while the kids ride to their content, and it's the best.

Visit a Free Little Library

There are a couple of these libraries near us and we've been frequenting them the last couple weeks. These libraries can be found in people's driveways, parks, the side of the road... they're everywhere! You can find a list of ones near you here. The basic idea is that you take a book you want, and you leave a book to share. We've found some real gems and always leave a couple books behind for someone else too!

Board Games

We've gotten into lots and lots of board games the last several weeks. Here is a post with some of our favorites... It's pretty outdated though, so I'll have to do an updated one soon!

Craft Box

We took an old mason jar box and filled it with tons of arts and craft supplies. Whenever the kids are getting restless we pull the box out and let them go ham on all the supplies. It's the best money we've ever spent.

Old Fashioned Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies are the perfect treat to make when you need a warm and delicious chocolate chip cookie.

Derek will head into the kitchen to cook something maybe 10 times a year total, but every time he does, the recipe is always a huge success. I often have a lot of resentment towards him sometimes because I feel like it took me the first 3-4 years of our marriage to really learn how to cook and bake, and he's put in significantly less work, with a far better track record.

I personally lean more towards oatmeal raisin cookies than I do old fashioned oatmeal chocolate chip, but even I couldn't resist them when they were fresh out of the oven.

Old Fashioned Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies are the perfect treat to make when you need a warm and delicious chocolate chip cookie.

Ingredients

Old Fashioned Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl using an electric mixer, cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar for about 1-2 minutes until well combined. Add in your egg and vanilla, and mix again, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together you flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt, and then add mixture to the wet ingredients, and mix together until just combined. Then add in your oats, mix until evenly distributed, and then add in your chocolate chips and mix one more time until evenly distributed. Don't over mix the dough.
  3. Cover your bowl with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for 30 minutes. This will ensure the cookies don't spread too far when baking.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350º. Using a 1 1/2-2 tbsp cookie scoop, scoop the dough onto ungreased cookie sheets a couple inches apart, and bake in the oven for 10-13 minutes, until the edges are golden brown.
  5. The tops of your cookies might not look set, but if your edges are golden brown, pull them out.
  6. Allow your cookies to cool on the pan for 5 minutes, before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. The cookies will finish baking on the hot pan when they're removed from the oven, and will set completely in that five minute period without being doughy in the middle.

The Best Cornmeal Pancakes

The Best Cornmeal Pancakes

These are the best cornmeal pancakes with simple pantry ingredients you always have on hand that will make any Saturday morning breakfast an experience the entire family will love.

A few months ago I started doing an awesome meal plan for runners and I really loved it. Then the coronavirus happened and they stopped putting out weekly meal plans because of the lack of access to a wide variety of foods at the moment. One of the recipes on the meal plan was cornmeal pancakes. I was super intrigued and decided try them out, only to have the batter be really thin and they weren't super tasty. They also took forever to make because there were literally about 15 different ingredients in the mixture.

The Best Cornmeal Pancakes

When those pancakes failed, I decided I still wanted to attempt a better version of cornmeal pancakes that tasted better, were slightly thick and fluffy, and didn't involve every ingredient in my pantry. We finally mastered the best cornmeal pancake recipe a few weeks ago, and they're our new go-to breakfast on Saturday mornings.

Can Use Cornmeal for Pancakes?

The cornmeal gives these pancakes a little bit of extra sweetness without adding more sugar, and also provides a unique texture that isn't common with your typical pancake, but really enjoyable. If cornbread and pancakes had a baby, these would be it. They're just delicious.

Can You Freeze Cornmeal Pancakes?

This recipe makes about 20-25 pancakes. We almost always have leftovers when we make these, and just put them in a plastic bag in the freezer, and then reheat them in the toaster for quick breakfasts on weekdays.

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal

  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 cups milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 4 tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your pancake griddle to 325 degrees. In a large bowl, add in your flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt. Use a whisk to combine. Then add in your milk, vinegar, vanilla and butter. Whisk everything until smooth.
  2. At first the batter appears to be super runny. If you wait 2-3 minutes before cooking and give it a second to set, the baking powder will work it's magic and thicken the batter just a little bit.
  3. Grease your pancake griddle with an oil, butter, or spray of your choice. Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup, scoop the batter onto your griddle. I like using a measuring cup to ensure they're all the same size.
  4. Once your pancakes start to bubble on the top (about 2-3 minutes) flip them over and let them cook all the way through on the other side (about 1-2 more minutes).
  5. Serve immediately with butter, syrup, berries, whatever toppings you like!

Church at Home During Quarantine + Giveaway

Church at Home During Quarantine + Giveaway

We have done church at home with our kids since the very first week of quarantine. My family and I are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, so what we do might look different than what you do in your home, depending on which church you attend. My hope is that I'm able to point you in a few good directions, regardless of your denomination.

If your church is closed for the time being due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and need ideas for how to have church at home, here are 5 ideas for you and your family. >>See the bottom of this post for information on how you can win one of these felt Atonement kits for your family.

My favorite part about doing church at home is that there is no right or wrong way to do it, and our church has not come out and said that you need to do X, Y, and Z each week in your home. You get to choose what works for you, and I think that's amazing. This post is not intended to say you need to do church like us, but to simply give ideas if what you're currently doing is not working for you.

Have The Sacrament: I really don't know what this looks like for people in other churches, but I've seen people from a variety of christian churches having the sacrament in their homes, so I'm assuming this is a widely practiced thing right now. Obviously check with your church leaders to see how they would like this done in the home, but it's honestly been the perfect thing to get my week going in the right direction, and I'm grateful we're able to do this each week.

Come Follow Me FHE Weekly Lessons: First of all, Angie from Come Follow Me FHE is a delight. We've been online friends for about six months now, and her Come Follow Me FHE lessons have saved our bacon this entire quarantine.

Our church comes out with specific lessons and scriptures for our world wide church to read each week, and Angie sends out weekly lesson plans geared towards kids that are based off of those church assigned lessons. Angie creates lesson plans, coloring pages, object lessons, and so much more, all for $7/month.

Each Sunday we print off the Come Follow Me FHE lessons, and work through as much of it as we can before we lose the kid's attention. Whatever we don't get to, we leave out in the living room, and work on it throughout the week.

If you're not LDS:
Angie has another shop, The Christian Cottage, where she provides biblically based lessons for Christians of any denomination!

Singing Time For Kids:
After we do our weekly lesson we move onto singing time for the kids. Angie has also been putting out singing time resources as part of your subscription during this time, and we've been using her fun activities with the kids while we sing songs that are either included in her lesson, or that the kids personally pick.

If you want to do your own thing, pick some hymns/songs that your kids love and...

  • Make little instruments for them to use while you sing, like rice in plastic eggs as a shaker, or a box to use as a drum.
  • You could do a hang-man game where you add a body part to your hang-man after each song.
  • Cut out a circle for the middle of a flower, and some flower pedals, and add a pedal to the flower after each song.
The sky is the limit! Your kids will love engaging in whatever fun activities you come up with, these were just some I thought of off the top of my head.

For Personal Study: Right now the only thing I'm doing each day is reading a chapter in the scriptures. But one thing I want to get in the habit of doing is reading/listening to a conference talk at least every Sunday. Our family time on Sunday is mostly focused on teaching the kids, so I want to carve out some time before bed to make some extra spiritual time for myself on Sundays.

Some talks from the April 2020 General Conference that I can't wait to go back and read again:
If you attend a different church, this could look like listening or reading a sermon from either a member of your church, or a non-denominational speaker you enjoy.

Felt Atonement Kit GIVEAWAY: My friends over at J.M Porium sent me this fun felt atonement kit that the kids have been loving playing with each day. It's an easy way to teach about Christ to a young audience, and can be enjoyed by all Christian denominations.

They're hosting a giveaway on my instagram right now, so be sure to head on over to enter!

A Day In The Life In Quarantine (Hour by Hour Log!)

A Day In The Life In Quarantine (Hour by Hour Log!)

I haven't done a day in the life post in forever, and after giving a big life update in yesterday's post, I thought it would be fun to share with you all what our days really look like right now. I feel lucky to have a lot of help and support from Derek, especially in the mornings because I am not a morning person at all.

5:45am: Kinsley wakes up and needs her blankets put back on her. As you can imagine, it's difficult for a quadriplegic to get their blankets on when they're fully awake, so tucking herself back in when she's mostly asleep is kind of an issue.

7:00am: Kinsley needs her blankets adjusted again, I never fell back asleep from the last adjustment, so I'm exhausted and pass out again until 8am.

8:00am: Kinsley and Kyle both wake up. Kyle goes downstairs to get breakfast and Derek (who woke up sometime between Kinsley's first wakeup call and now) brings Kinsley down to eat while I start my morning routine.

8:05am: I wake up and start checking my email, read my scriptures, tidy our room and start some laundry, and then get dressed and do my hair for the day.

8:40am: I head downstairs and get Kinsley dressed and started on schoolwork.

9:00am: I make my oatmeal while Kinsley works on her writing worksheets. I sit down and eat while I help her through the rest of her schoolwork.

9:30am: Kinsley is done with her schoolwork and starts playing with toys while I start typing out this post on the couch.

9:35am: I share my blog post from today on all my social media channels, actually respond to the emails that came in through the middle of the night, and get a bulk of my blog work done for the day before lunchtime.

10:00am: I went upstairs to switch out the laundry and find our HSA debit card so I can order the kids new glasses. They got their prescriptions updated in January and I still never got them new glasses so I figured now was a good time to do that.

10:54am: After spending an hour going back and forth between different websites and finding frames for the kids, I finally got their glasses ordered, and now am heading back to my email to sift through the multiple emails that came through in the last little bit.

11:00am: I start writing a blog post about grooming your own dog at home. Writing takes about 35 minutes. I still need to take and edit pictures for later, but if feels good to have some work done for later in the week!

11:35am: The kids have been playing well together for the last hour so I go upstairs and hide in our walk in closet where Derek is working and sit on the floor and eat some spicy almonds.

11:45am: I finish my snack, change a load of laundry and then head downstairs and clean up the big toy mess from the kids before making lunch.

12:00pm: Kyle makes himself a quesadilla for lunch, Derek comes downstairs to eat with us and makes a turkey sandwich. Kinsley wanted a hot dog and peaches and I made myself a massive salad. Kinsley ended up eating the rest of my salad and I hopped back onto my computer to clear out a few more emails while Derek sat and ate with Kinsley.

12:30pm: The kids and I head upstairs for quiet time while I made a phone call. Our belt for our treadmill broke and I spent almost an hour on hold with customer service only for them to tell me the repair would cost more than it was worth and I should wait for our treadmill to explode before buying a new one.

1:30pm: I email the company that sent me the treadmill (I got it for free as a product testing opportunity), and ask if there are any options moving forward for them to send a new treadmill... not holding out much hope, but at least we have money in savings for a new one if we need to go that route.

1:45pm: I veg out on Instagram and youtube for a little bit before remembering I need to do my makeup for an Instagram picture I need to take. I then remember that I also need to put a new shirt on which leads me to folding all of the laundry that I did this morning, and to switch the darks into the dryer.

2:00pm: The kids say they're hungry and want a snack. Today we had granola bars and fruit snacks.

2:10pm: I finally change my shirt and recruit Derek to take the instagram picture for me.

2:19pm: Forget I'm supposed to be holding a sign in the picture, hop onto picmonkey to make the sign I need.

2:30pm: Decided I didn't like my hair in the picture, curled my hair and made Derek retake the picture.

2:40pm: Edit the pictures and send them over to the person that needed them for the Instagram collaboration.

2:45pm: Kinsley is playing games on the ipad and Kyle is downstairs watching Ninjago. I decide to get my running clothes on and get my workout done for the day- 75 minutes easy pace on the treadmill (still using it since it hasn't caught fire and killed me yet).

4:30pm: Finished my run (7.2 miles) and grabbed the mail. The kid's bathing suits that were supposed to be in their Easter baskets came. The kids were both thrilled and disappointed that it will be a long time before we can use them.

4:35pm: Finish up some last minute work for the day while eating some more spicy almonds, and drinking some water. Derek is playing a board game with Kinsley since he's done working for the day, and Kyle has turned off the TV and is playing downstairs.

5:00pm: I hop in the shower while Derek unloads and loads the dishwasher for me. Dinner goes in the oven.

5:45pm: Dinner is ready and we all sit down and eat together. The kids start going bonkers and I head out to get Derek and I a soda #priorities.

6:30pm: I get home from my soda run and Derek has already gotten the kids in bed. We sit on the couch for a few minutes before his family Facetimes us, and we get the kids out of bed to talk to them.

8:00pm: We get the kids back and bed and Derek and I watch the news together while I get some abs/core work done.

8:30pm: I look for pictures that we can post to The Bamboo Brace Instagram account, and go back and forth with my bosses on which picture we should post and the caption.

9:00pm: The kids both get out of bed again and I get up and get them back in bed.

9:35pm: I finish posting for The Bamboo Brace, get this post ready for tomorrow, watch a show with Derek and head off to bed!

4 Ingredient Artisan Bread Recipe

This 4 ingredient artisan bread recipe is super easy to make and is the perfect side for any meal.

I've been doing a lot of baking over the last few weeks and have been making a lot of fun recipes made from pantry ingredients. Nothing like bare shelves in the grocery stores to make you cook with what you've got on hand. I've been seeing so many great artisan bread recipes the last several weeks and knew I needed to try my hand at making some. This 4 ingredient artisan bread recipe was super easy to make and tastes amazing!

How to Make 4 Ingredient Artisan Bread:

This is probably the easiest bread recipe you're ever going to make. The night before you want to eat it, mix all your ingredients together in a large bowl and simply cover it, and let it proof and ferment for a long time over night. After it's sat for 12-18 hours, you're going to punch down the dough, form it into a ball, and then let it rise for another two hours before baking. After it's risen for two more hours, you'll bake it in the oven for 35 minutes. It is super simple, and turns out perfect every time.

How to Store 4 Ingredient Artisan Bread:

After the bread has cooled and come down to room temperature you can store it in a ziplock bag on the counter for a week. I think storing the bread in a bag is best because it helps to keep the bread soft and prevents the entire loaf from going stale.

Baking Artisan Bread in a Dutch Oven:

This bread is baked in a dutch oven. You're basically going to need any oven proof pot and lid combination that you have. If you have an actual cast iron dutch oven that you would commonly use for camping, that is great. While we do have a regular dutch oven, I prefer to use my Calphalon pot that I purchased at Target years ago. The pot and lid are both oven safe, and work great! Just check the manufacture's recommendations with whatever you decide to work with.

Ingredients

4 Ingredient Artisan Bread
  • 2 cups water at 70-100 degrees
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl mix together all of your ingredients. The dough will look super sticky, it's fine. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise/ferment overnight on your counter, anywhere from 12-18 hours.
  2. Two hours before baking, lightly flour a work surface. Punch the dough down and turn it out onto the floured surface and form it into a ball. Then lightly grease a different bowl, place your dough inside, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise for two more hours.
  3. To bake, preheat your oven to 450º. Place your oven-safe pot or dutch oven into your oven, and let it get hot as your oven heats itself. Once the oven is heated, remove your pot (carefully with oven mitts), place the dough inside, cover with a lid, and bake for 30 minutes.
  4. After 30 minutes, remove the lid and continue baking for 5 more minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown.
  5. Once baked, remove the pot from the oven, carefully transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool. For best results, wait about 15 minutes before cutting with a serrated knife.
