Gourmet Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Cranberry sauce is a great side dish to throw in the crock pot on Thanksgiving morning. This gourmet cranberry sauce tastes amazing and will be the perfect side this holiday season.

As it turns out, I'm not a huge snob when it comes to cranberry sauce. I like homemade just as much as I like the jellied version in a can. They both have room in my life, and I'm not afraid to admit that. When we made Thanksgiving dinner in 2013, we made this gourmet cranberry sauce recipe in the slow cooker though, and it was amazing. It is the perfect set it and forget it side for Thanksgiving dinner that you can put together with little effort.

Set your crock pot on high for three hours, coming back to stir it every hour. You can serve it hot or cold, but I prefer chilling before serving.

Can you make Cranberry Sauce ahead of time?

Yes, in fact I would recommend it! I personally think cranberry sauce tastes better when served cold instead of hot. You can make this cranberry sauce 1-2 days before Thanksgiving and then store it in the fridge until you're ready to serve!

How to Set a Table for Thanksgiving

Setting a table for Thanksgiving doesn't have to be a complicated process, and you can get everything you need right from your local dollar store!

We've had quite a few Thanksgiving's at home by ourselves, and it's looking like we'll be doing that again this year as well. If you're wondering how to set a table for Thanksgiving, you've come to the right place! You can decorate a table for Thanksgiving with inexpensive pieces from your local Dollar Tree, without breaking the bank, and still walk away with a high end look!

How to Set A Table for Thanksgiving:

Decorating a table for Thanksgiving can be super easy! To start you're going to want to find something to use as a tablecloth. I recommend going to the craft store and getting a big piece of lace that you can use universally for all holidays as a base. Then you're going to want to get a long piece of burlap that you can use as a runner, again likely to be found at a craft store.

Next you're going to head to your local Dollar Tree where you can pick up some plates! I purchased these small white salad plates, the red plates, and the gold chargers all at Dollar Tree several years ago, and they've not only held up well, but you can still purchase the same designs this year too!

When you place these on your table you're going to layer them with the gold charger on the bottom, then your red plate, and then your white salad plate on top. It's super easy and comes together for only $3 per person!

Drink ware is another great find at Dollar Tree. We purchased these tall glasses there years ago and are what we use for any holiday meal in our home. They're beautifully designed and made, and elevate your space for super cheap! I love how they give the look of real crystal without the hefty pricetag!

I love a good centerpiece, but these can definitely get pricey. The one shown here was originally $50 from Michael's but I only paid $25 after one of their half off coupons! Never go to the craft store without those coupons, it will save you so much money. If you want a fall centerpiece for even less money, check out the DIY I made last year on a budget.

Once everything was said and done, I spent about $60 putting this entire table together five years ago, and I've been able to use it every Thanksgiving since. It's been a great small investment up front that has lasted the test of time throughout the years. I especially love that these products are all annual products that most stores carry, so even though this was originally put together five years ago, you can still create the same look on a budget this year too!

Teepee Dirt Cups| Cute Thanksgiving Treats

Teepee dirt cups are the perfect quick and easy cute Thanksgiving treat to make with kids this fall season. All you need is some pudding, cookie crumbs, and ice cream cones to make these festive treat.

Thanksgiving teepee dirt cups. Cute Thanksgiving treats. Cute Thanksgiving desserts. Elegant Thanksgiving desserts. Thanksgiving cookies. Chocolate Thanksgiving desserts. Thanksgiving desserts to impress. Fall treats. #fall #thanksgiving #chocolate #dessert #treats #kids #family

In keeping with the theme of all things Thanksgiving this week, I'm back with another cute Thanksgiving treat idea. These Teepee dirt cups would be a great activity to make with your children before Thanksgiving where you can teach your kids the true meaning behind Thanksgiving, how the Native Americans lived, and what their lives really looked like. I recommend accompanying this treat with one of the historically accurate books on my Thanksgiving book list.

Teepee Dirt Cups

These teepee dirt cups are a fun activity to share with kids during this late fall season. Kids will love helping to stir the instant pudding together, crushing the cookie crumbs, and dipping the ice cream cones into the sprinkles. It's a super easy, fun, and hands on activity for kids during Thanksgiving.

What You Need to Make Teepee Dirt Cups

To make these teepee dirt cups you will need chocolate chips, orange sprinkles, waffle ice cream cones, instant chocolate pudding, and and Oreo crumbs. You will also need some small see through plastic cups. You could also buy already made pudding in individual snack packs which would save you the step of making pudding and having to purchase additional cups.

How to Make Teepee Dirt Cups

To make these teepee dirt cups you're going to start by melting your chocolate in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between each one to make sure your chocolate doesn't burn. Repeat this until your chocolate is melted all the way through and smooth.

When your chocolate is melted you're going to dip the top and bottom of your waffle cone into the melted chocolate, and then into your orange sprinkles. Set your cones aside on some wax paper until the chocolate has set.

While you're waiting for your chocolate to set, put some Oreos in a bag and smash them with a rolling pin to create crumbs, or the "dirt" for these cups! You can also prepare your pudding at this time. my box required that we mix the powder with milk and stir, and then wait five minutes for it to set all the way. It was super fast and easy.

Once your ingredients are prepared you can now layer your pudding cups. Take a clear plastic cup and pour about 1/2 cup of pudding into each of your cups. Then you'll sprinkle in some of your Oreo crumbs for the dirt, and place your waffle cone on top, with the pointed side facing up towards the ceiling.

Activities to Do While Eating Teepee Pudding Cups

If you're wanting to make this a full learning experience about the Native people, you could also incorporate some fun activities to accompany this snack. You could start with reading a historically accurate book about Native people, color some Thanksgiving coloring pages, and even watch a fun Thanksgiving movie!

Thanksgiving Treat Bags| Hand Turkey Treats

Thanksgiving Treat Bags are the perfect dessert to have for young children at Thanksgiving. These Thanksgiving treat bags made with popcorn and M&Ms will be the perfect addition to your holiday.

In the spirit of making Thanksgiving a fun holiday for kids who don't love all the Thanksgiving things, these Thanksgiving treat bags in the shape of hand turkeys would be the perfect addition to your holidays plans. I love that these treat bags take very minimal effort (although sorting M&Ms is like watching paint dry), and you can even get your kids to join in on the fun!

Thanksgiving treat bags. Hand turkey Thanksgiving treats. Thanksgiving treats for kids. Thanksgiving desserts. Thanksgiving dinner treats. Elegant Thanksgiving desserts. Fun Thanksgiving treats appetizers. Chocolate Thanksgiving desserts. #thanksgiving #fall #treats #dessert #kids

Hand Turkey Thanksgiving Treat Bags:

These Thanksgiving treat bags come together with very few supplies. Simply get some m&ms, plastic gloves, popcorn, an elastic hair tie, and you can put these bags together in just a few minutes. Even better if you have small children who want to be involved in the dinner making process, set them up at the table to make some of these while they wait for other guests to arrive. They'll love being big helpers, and there really is little room for error with this project.

Best Plastic Gloves for Treat Bags:

For these Thanksgiving treat bags you're going to want to use clear plastic, non-latex, non-powdered gloves. I bought these at Walmart and got about 120 for under $2. However, I bought adult size gloves and quickly realized that used up a lot of M&Ms. I would recommend finding some child size plastic gloves.

Candy Variations for Thanksgiving Treat Bags:

I used M&Ms for my Thanksgiving treat bags, but you could totally switch this up with a lot of different things. Reese's pieces would be a great option since they're already fall colors. You could also use candy corn, Sixlets, Skittles, plain chocolate chips, the sky is really the limit!

How to Make Hand Turkey Thanksgiving Treat Bags:

To make these treat bags you're simply going to sort out all your M&Ms by color, and then put each color into one of the fingers of your plastic bag. Once your fingers are filled, put your popcorn into the middle section, and then tie it off with a small hair elastic. If you don't have hair elastics you could simply tie a small knot at the bottom, but the elastics make it much easier!

If you want to take these treat bags to the next level, you could totally glue a google eye, and a small orange paper triangle onto them to make them look like a full blown turkey. Or be lazy like me and know your children will appreciate these, even without the extras.

Ingredients

  • Classic M&Ms* See note
  • Clear Plastic Bags
  • Popcorn
  • Clear Hair Elastics

Instructions

  1. Start by sorting out all of your M&Ms by color.
  2. Then place each color of M&Ms into the fingers of one of your gloves, until the finger section is filled.
  3. Repeat this for all the M&M colors and finger sections.
  4. Once the finger sections of your glove are filled, then pour the popcorn into the remaining open section of your glove.
  5. Finally, tie it off at the bottom with a small hair elastic and you're finished.
  6. Repeat this process for as many bags that you need to fill.

Notes:

One shareable size bag of M&Ms was enough to fill one adult size glove. I recommend trying to find kids sized gloves to use less M&Ms. Purchase as much M&Ms and popcorn as you think you'll need to fill your gloves!

8 Kids Thanksgiving Movies

Kids Thanksgiving movies are the perfect way to cuddle up together for family movie night leading up to Thanksgiving day. These eight titles will surely become family favorites throughout the holiday season.

Does anyone else feel like Thanksgiving is a somewhat difficult holiday to celebrate? There aren't too many good Thanksgiving books to read with kids, there seems to be a lot of content that is culturally insensitive to Native Americans and the true origins of the holiday, and finding something to watch that is light and fluffy, while still being festive seems nearly impossible. I've gathered together 8 kids Thanksgiving movies that will hopefully be fun and entertaining while still getting your family in the festive mindset for the upcoming holiday!

Thanksgiving movies on Netflix. Movies to watch on Thanksgiving. Hallmark Thanksgiving movies. Thanksgiving movies for Kindergarten. Disney Thanksgiving movies. #thanksgiving #movies #Kids #family #familyfun

8 Kids Thanksgiving Movies:

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving: Did anyone else grow up watching all things Charlie Brown for every holiday and event? I did and I'm trying to project that onto my children and their future off spring as well. I love the simple message of this movie about gathering with friends and sharing what you have, even if it doesn't look perfect or make total sense. All the Charlie Brown movies will not be avaialable to watch on TV this year, and the DVDs are selling out like crazy online. You can watch for free on AppleTV+ from Nov 25th- Nov 27th.

Garfield Thanksgiving: Garfield always reminds me of my grandma who was the epitome of creepy cat lady. This Garfield Thanksgiving show is available to watch on Youtube, and if you're into watching a man make Thanksgiving dinner while making a fool of himself, this is for you. It's 30 minutes long and is a great quick watch!

Free Birds: This cute movie is about two turkeys who are vastly different from each other but decide to work together to travel back in time to get turkey taken off the Thanksgiving dinner menu. It sounds super cute and I'm excited to watch it with my kids! Available to rent or purchase on Amazon.

Winne the Pooh: Seasons of Giving: Is there anything more wholesome than Winnie The Pooh? In this Thanksgiving special Pooh Bear and his friends discover their new favorite season, and find the fixings for the perfect Thanksgiving dinner. You can watch a low quality version for free on Youtube via this playlist, or there are several used DVD options you can find online.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Alvin's Thanksgiving Celebration: Alvin and the Chipmunks were a huge classic in my house growing up. Their Thanksgiving special is wildly popular and on every single Thanksgiving movie list I saw while prepping this post. You can watch this by purchasing the entire Chipmunk Holiday collection on Amazon for $20+ or just the Thanksgiving version for a whopping $35. It might be available to stream from some obscure source online. But these are the two best legal options from what I can see.

Turkey Hollow: A Jim Henson's movie about two kids who find themselves bored and without internet tracking an elusive monster that everyone else in town thought was an urban legend. A great movie for older kids with live people and rate PG.

We’re back: A Dinosaur’s Story: A couple of kids in NYC wish for something amazing to happen and find themselves hiding some dinosaurs in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade at the start of their big adventure. DVD is available to purchase on Amazon.

The Mouse on the Mayflower: This movie tells about the Pilgrims original voyage on The Mayflower from the perspective of a mouse who saves the ship during a storm at sea. When they arrive to America safely they start their church, sign The Mayflower Compact, and have the first Thanksgiving feast. Available to watch on Youtube.

Are there any Kids Thanksgiving Movies you like watching during this time with your children? I'd love to hear about them in the comments below!

20+ Thanksgiving Children's Books

Thanksgiving children's books can reach a wide range of topics from historical and serious to light and fluffy. This list includes Thanksgiving Children's Books for a variety of Thanksgiving themes.

Thanksgiving Children's books can be a complicated space to navigate. There's the classic light and fluffy ones that talk about turkeys dodging farmers. There are serious books that open up conversations about what it was really like to be a native person at that time. Then there are the books that talk about the beauty of gathering with family and the magic of fall.

I personally think that all of these types of Thanksgiving Children's Books have their time and space, and that they can all be a great way to talk about and celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. I'm the type of parent that really likes to teach my children about the truth and meaning behind the traditions we celebrate, while also enjoying the fun that comes along with holidays as well.

If you're in the market for Thanksgiving Children's Books that hit all the different nuances of Thanksgiving day, I've broken this list up into a variety of categories to help you find your favorite titles.

Thanksgiving Children's Books

Historically Based Pilgrims/Native American Books

The Very First Americans: I think it's so important to teach our kids about who really lived in this land first. This book tells about the native tribes from coast to coast and what their lives were like before we got here.

Squanto's Journey: The Story of the First Thanksgiving: This book tells of Squanto who first greeted the pilgrims when they got to America. It does a really good job of accurately telling what this moment was like, and will lead to deep conversations about this time with your children.

The First Thanksgiving Day: A Counting Story: This fun picture book takes you through the preparations that the Indians and Pilgrims went through to prepare the first Thanksgiving feast. It has a warm message of working together and loving your neighbor despite differences.

The First Thanksgiving Day: This fun counting book tells the story of the first Thanksgiving for young readers in a fun a fast paced story. This is one we started reading with the kids years ago and it's still a favorite.

The Story of the Pilgrims: This book tells about the journey of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower and their first harsh winter in America and the help they received from the Native people.

The First Thanksgiving: A Lift The Flap Book: This super simple board book is a great and colorful way to talk about Thanksgiving with your smallest children.

Sarah Gives Thanks: How Thanksgiving Became A National Holiday: This book tells the story of Sarah Hale and the work she did to get Thanksgiving recognized as a national holiday.

The Littlest Pilgrim: This cute book talks about a little pilgrim who finds herself unable to help with many of the chores because she is too small. But she's never to small to make a special friend.

If You Were at The First Thanksgiving: This book tells the tale of the first Thanksgiving written from the perspective of a child. I love the way it tells the story of this time, and it has some serisouly beautiful illustrations.

Thanksgiving Children's Books About Family Feasts

Over the River and Through the Wood: This picture book has beautiful illustrations to the poem we all know, and sung as a child. Although I was shocked to see that the book said, "to grandfather's house we go...", I could have sworn it was grandmother's my entire life.

One is a Feast for Mouse: Mouse peeks out of his hole after Thanksgiving dinner and sees one little pea on the kitchen table... along with a ton of other leftovers. Can he get them all back to his hole without getting caught?

Thanksgiving in the Woods: This story is about a family who takes a journey into the woods each year t eat Thanksgiving in nature, just like how the original holiday started.

Thanksgiving Children's Books About Turkeys:

Run, Turkey, Run!: It's almost Thanksgiving and everyone on the farm is getting ready and excited for the big day... everyone except for Turkey that is. Can he escape the Farmer in time, or will he become dinner?

Turkey Trouble: This book is about a turkey that comes up with a lot of different disguises so that he doesn't become Thanksgiving dinner. The end result is quite funny and one the kids will love.

The Plump and Perky Turkey: The townspeople try to lure the birds to their homes by hosting an arts and crafts show just for turkeys. They get the turkeys to come, but the turkeys outsmart them as the last minute.

10 Fat Turkeys: This fun story teaches kids to count backwards from 10 while having a fun rhyming rhythm about fun turkey antics and a grumpy farmer.

The Great Turkey Race: All the turkeys want to be the Thanksgiving turkey, but only one can be it, so they hold a race. You'll have to pick up a copy to see how this tale gobbles out.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey: My kids have adored this series for years, but we've never read the Thanksgiving version. This is one we'll have to add to the library this year.

More Thanksgiving Titles:

Balloons Over Broadway: Being from New York I loved this book that told the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (which I knew none of until I read this). The pictures are beautiful, the historical events are told in simple ways for young readers, and I even welled up a few tears as I was reading this to Jay. There aren't any sad parts... I think it was just "I miss New York in the fall".

Arthur's Thanksgiving: Arthur is assigned to be the director of the school's Thanksgiving play, but what is he to do when no one wants to play the most important role of the Thanksgiving turkey?

The Night Before Thanksgiving: You guys all knew this book from Natasha Wing was going to be on here right? The only book I purchased this month and it found it's home next to the rest of the collection on our bookshelf.
