Best Biscuit Recipe

Biscuits are the perfect easy side dish to any soup or casserole. If you want to make the best biscuits, use this recipe to get perfect biscuits on the table in 20 minutes.

When Derek and I moved to North Carolina (seven years ago this month!), I felt this obligation to get really invested into the southern culture and cuisine. My first introduction to southern cooking was biscuit making. This was the first recipe we ever tried, nailed it on the first batch and have been making them regularly ever since.

Best Biscuit Recipe:

This is the best biscuit recipe in my opinion because these biscuits are incredibly easy to make, they get great height when they're baking, and they only take about 5 minutes to throw together before putting them in the oven. They taste great with butter, honey, or jam, and are a longtime favorite in our home.

How to Make the Best Biscuits:

What makes this the best biscuit recipe is the fact that these are super easy to make with minimal ingredients. Simply whisk together your flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar, then dump in your milk and shortening. Then you simply mix everything together with an electric mixer and your dough is done!

Then you simply flatten the dough out on a floured surface until they're about a half inch thick, cut out this biscuits with the mouth of a glass, pop them in the oven to bake and they're complete!

When to Make Biscuits:

I've used these as a side for soups, salads, and other light meals. I've also made them as part of our chicken biscuit pot pie, and countless other times for biscuits and sausage gravy. They're probably the easiest biscuits you can make, and are our go-to when we need a side dish in a hurry.

  1. Interesting... these look like what we call Scones in England and we have it with jam and clotted cream. I wonder if they are one of the same. Can the 'shortening' be substituted with butter?

    1. Yes! Same thing! We just have different names for some baked goods in the US! You can definitely use butter in this recipe instead of shortening!

    2. I'm from England but moved to US 16 years ago. biscuits and scones are entirely different. America has scones but the UK does not have anything such as biscuits.
