DIY: Brown Sugar Facial Scrub

The best part about being on the activities committee at church is that, whenever I need to make something, it automatically turns into a freebie blog post! Our Relief Society is doing a Relax, Renew, Recharge night on Thursday and part of the evening will involve facials. A lady in our ward gave us a recipe for brown sugar facial scrubs and they were so easy to make and leave your skin feeling incredibly soft!

I was a little hesitant making them at first because it involved coconut oil, and I'd never used it before and always associated it as "one of those hippie ingredients", but it was so easy, and once I got past the hurdle of microwaving the brick of oil for 30 seconds so that it would be creamy, it was all smooth sailing from there.

This recipe is easy to customize. You can change out the orange oil for basically any oil that you want. This would be a fun neighbor gift for Christmas. Just put it in a mini mason jar and a bow, and you're good to go! I made (40) 1/2 cup portions of this scrub, which was the original recipe multiplied by 20. It did not take long at all though! I did all 40 scrubs in about an hour!

Ingredients:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup coconut oil (or almond, olive, whatever you've got)
4 drops of citrus essential oil (or 1 tsp of any citrus zest)

Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and then store in an airtight container. Scrub should last for up to 2 weeks. If using a firmer oil, like coconut oil, loosen it up in the microwave for a few seconds before hand. Don't go to crazy with the microwave though, I did an entire 30oz container for 30 seconds and it was perfect. So for a smaller amount, definitely do 5 second intervals.

  1. I guess I'm a hippie ;) I loooooove coconut oil, and use if for everything from lotion to hair treatment to facials to food to... I could go on. But, I already admit that I'm a hippie. I think the vegan thing gave it away.

  3. How fun! I'll have to give it a try. I keep seeing those essential oils so it must be the new trend but where do you buy them? Do you have to order online or is there a store that sells them?

  5. Must try!!! This look so fun. I am all about coconut oil... It definitely weirded me out at first, but now I use it for everything. Love cooking with it and using it as a butter substitute on toast and sweet potatoes! Great post!
