Why Make a Homemade Crayon Costume?

A crayon costume is colorful, iconic, and instantly recognizable making it the perfect costume for Halloween parties, school dress-up days, or even group costumes. The best part? You can make this costume without sewing! Instead of spending hours stitching, you can use these hem bonding strips to make the process quick and easy.

I learned this the hard way—one year I tried hot-gluing a crayon costume together, only to end up with broken sewing machine needles and a last-minute store-bought costume. Now I know the secret to a stress-free DIY crayon costume: hem bonding strips.

What are Hem Bonding Strips?

Hem bonding strips are essentially double sided tape for fabric. The benefit to using the ones linked here are that they are not only a new sew option, but they also don't require an iron. Meaning you can stick your costume together and not worry about whether or not its going to fall apart. They stick together really well, and it's a great option for something like a Halloween costume that won't be used much anyway.

Supplies You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need to make your homemade crayon costume:

Step 1: Create the “Crayon” Letters

  • Download the free Motor Oil font from dafont.com.
  • Open a Word document and type out “Crayon” in large letters.
  • Print, cut out the letters, and trace them backward onto black felt.
  • Cut out the felt letters carefully.
  • This will give your homemade crayon costume that signature Crayola-style look.

Step 2: Make the Crayon Logo Oval

  • Cut a large black felt oval big enough to hold the word “Crayon.”
  • Make sure the letters fit nicely in the center.
  • Use Scotch™ Hem Bonding Strips to attach the letters to the oval.

Step 3: Build the Crayon Costume Base

  • Measure the person who will wear the costume (length and width).
  • Cut two pieces of colored felt to those measurements (one for the front, one for the back).
  • Layer the two pieces together and cut a hole at the top for the head.
  • While the pieces are still layered, measure a few inches down from the shoulders and cut out armholes on both sides.
  • Use hem bonding strips to close the seams — along the shoulders and down the sides — leaving the armholes open.
  • Turn the costume inside out so the raw edges are hidden.

Step 4: Add the Crayon Details

  • Attach the black oval with the “Crayon” letters to the front of the costume using hem bonding strips.
  • Cut two long black strips from felt.
  • Place one at the top and one at the bottom of the costume to mimic real crayon wrappers.

  4. I admire people who make such things by themselves. When I enter the stores with goods for sewing I even don't know what to do with them. When I was at school and was asked to make some clothing during labor lessons I always asked my mam to do my homework for me .
