Last Christmas Derek and I were planning on having cinnamon rolls for breakfast when we realized we didn't have enough flour. At the last minute we decided to make French Toast Casserole and this recipe did not disappoint. We've tried a couple different French Toast Casserole recipes in the past but some of them can just be too sweet and not incredibly satisfying. I think the fact that this french toast casserole recipe only has 1/2 cup of sugar in the crumb topping is what makes it the best french toast casserole. It's not too sweet and doesn't feel overwhelming when you use syrup or another sweet topping.

How to Make The Best French Toast Casserole:

To make the best french toast casserole all you need to do is mix together all the wet ingredients for your batter. Tear apart your bread into bite size pieces, and toss them into a greased 9x13 pan. Pour the batter on top, along with your prepared crumb topping. Bake your french toast casserole in the oven for about 40 minutes, and then enjoy with your family!

Which Bread to Use for The Best French Toast Casserole:

You can use any type of bread that you have on hand. We've even used a loaf of sandwich bread in the past. A nice loaf of bread from the bakery section of the grocery store is preferred. You could us a loaf of Italian, sourdough, Challa, etc... I prefer sourdough just because it gives a nice contrast to this otherwise very sweet dish.

The Best French Toast Casserole

The best french toast casserole comes together with just seven simple ingredients and is the perfect meal to enjoy on a holiday morning.

Ingredients

French Toast Batter
  • 10 cups Bread, cubed into 1 inch pieces
  • 8 Eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups Milk
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon
Crumb Topping
  • 1/2 cup Flour
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350º. While your oven is warming up, whisk your eggs, milk, and cinnamon together. Cube your bread into 1 inch pieces. Toss your bread cubes in with your egg mixture, and then pour into a greased 9x13 casserole dish.
  2. Pulse the topping ingredients together in a food processor until it resembles a coarse pea-size consistency, and then sprinkle over the top of your casserole.
  3. Bake in the oven for 45-50 minutes, or until set. Serve with fresh fruit, berries, whipped cream, syrup, etc...
